Groundwork
After working with 3 different horse trainers Jenny proved to me that there was no other way but the Parelli Way for her … so that’s what it will be…
Everything is really cute when they’re little, and Jenny being a miniature horse, well, it was too cute! She would walk all over you and I just couldn’t find anything that would help her understand me. All the other horses we owned could understand what I was asking. They would not walk all over me. Then a friend called and told me about this Parelli instructor that was coming into our area and would teach :the 7 Games”. I didn’t know what the 7 Games were even about. I thought the price is worth giving me something different to try, and I’ll have some fun with my friends. So I decided that I would take Jenny the Mini.
Off we went. All the horses there were regular size horses, and there was Jenny—- this really cute little miniature horse that all the other horses were afraid of! Nothing bothers Jenny: she would just take over, walk all over me, step on my toes (thank goodness she had little hooves), and try to run off. The first thing I had to change was my equipment; okay I was game. It wasn’t that much money, and I’ll have more stuff for my tack room I thought. I learned half of the games, we ran out of time and the time just flew by.
I was very interested in these games we were learning and so was Jenny. I was very surprised that by the end of the lesson, Jenny had learned to stay out of my space and pay attention to me. That was many years ago. Since then I have incorporated other ground working methods that have enhanced the games: Ray Hunt’s, Peggy Cumming’s, TTouch, Brad Cameron’s, and other fine clinicians who have helped us humans communicate with horses. The horses do appreciate the fact that we are trying to understand their language. You’ll see!
